A new Co-op store in Appleby is set to open this spring following a £985,000 investment, creating five jobs.
The extended Sands site, which will be almost 8,000sq ft, sits on the former Roy Ashley Ford garage site next to the smaller existing Co-op store and will open seven days a week.
On completion, the Co-op will lease the store from Mr Ashley who has delivered the purpose-built shop unit, which was designed to alleviate the local flood risk from the River Eden while sitting sympathetically within the surrounding area.
As well as running on 100 per cent renewable electricity, Appleby’s Co-op will also offer Amazon Lockers, customer car parking, hot food, Costa Coffee Express and a bakery.
Paul Reilly, Co-op area manager, said: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to make such a significant investment in Appleby.
“The site has been totally transformed and we are looking forward to welcoming the community back to their new-look store.”
