New grants for businesses affected by coronavirus restrictions

Eden District Council has announced a new round of grants for local businesses affected by Cumbria’s December Tier 2 restrictions.

The newly launched Local Restrictions Support Grant (Open) is available for those firms which, although were legally allowed to stay open, were still severely impacted by the Tier 2 restrictions which were in place in Cumbria between December 2 and December 30.

The grant is aimed specifically at businesses impacted by Tier 2 restrictions and not the pandemic as a whole.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate an impact due to the December restrictions, which included no travel allowed from Tier 3 and 4 areas, restrictions on household mixing inside, rule of six outside and a maximum of 15 people for weddings.

Eligible businesses are:

  • Hospitality venues like pubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, social clubs and visitor attractions
  • Accommodation operators like hotels, B&Bs, self-catering cottages, campsites and caravan park
  • Sport and leisure facilities such as gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, fitness and dance studios, climbing walls and adventure pursuits centres

This criteria may be widened at a later date, should sufficient funding be available.

Grants between £467 and £1,050 are available for each 14-day period of restriction.

The amount of funding awarded is dependent on a business property’s rateable value, or its number of employees.

Mary Robinson, deputy leader and portfolio holder for economies and enterprise for Eden District Council, said: “There is a wide range of grants available for Eden businesses at the moment, to help with difficulties faced resulting from the COVID pandemic.

“The newly launched grant is able to support those businesses that were impacted by the Tier 2 restrictions in December; such as those firms which were impacted from their usual customer base being unable to travel.

“I would urge all businesses in Eden – large or small – to check to see what grants they are eligible for.”

An application form has been made live on the Eden District Council website at www.eden.gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/support-for-businesses

People can also call 01768 817817.

For business legally required to close under local restrictions, the Local Restrictions Support Grant (Closed) continues to be available.
