Five holiday cabins could go on a farm on the outskirts of Newbiggin-on-Lune as part of plans for an “eco retreat”.
Planning permission is being sought for the proposal at Rigg End, off Wath Lane, which has been developed as holiday cottages.
The application has been submitted on behalf of Mike Hampson, of Rigg End Yorkshire Dales Ltd, with headquarters in Cheshire, and Koto Design Ltd, a bespoke sustainable prefab homes and cabins business.
The cabins would be 20m in length by 6.8m in width, and the development would create two part-time jobs, according to documents submitted to the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, which is expected to make a decision by the end of October. Documents stated: “The concept has been to create structures that encourage people to be outdoors, connect with the wider landscape and temper the environment for wind, rain and bright sunlight. Dark timber cladding has been chosen as this has the best chance of blending with the surrounding landscape.”
The cabins are described as “non-permanent” and designed to be low impact.
Visitors will be encouraged to participate in activities in line with sustainable tourism, such as nature walks, bird watching, and other outdoor activities, the applicants said. Cumbria Tourism wrote in support. Managing director Gill Haigh wrote: “The business reflects our vision to create an unrivalled reputation for outdoor wellbeing and help reinforce our reputation with domestic and international visitors as the number one rural destination in the UK.”
The applicants added: “The project is the next stage of the sustained economic development of the existing rental business and brings innovative high quality architecture to a beautiful location.”
