Eden Council’s planning committee has approved a plan for a 67-affordable home housing estate in Penrith.
Atkinson Building Contractors Ltd and Riverside housing association were seeking approval for the erection of a 100 per cent affordable housing development — split between rented and shared ownership properties —on land at White Ox Farm, Inglewood Road.
Previously, the application had been refused by the district authority’s planning committee after concerns were raised which included no education contribution being on offer, a perceived lack of connectivity with the rest of the town, and issues over housing density.
Councillors approved planning permission, subject to a legal agreement, which includes an education contribution of £60,000, by 10 votes to one.
It was also agreed that a scheme detailing the routes and specifications of footpaths to link the site to the nearest existing footpaths would need be approved and constructed before the occupation of any of the houses.
John Thompson (Con, Penrith) said: “We desperately need housing in this town.”
