Organisers of the Tour of Britain cycle race have confirmed that Cumbria will again feature as a stage venue next year.
This year’s event had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus crisis and it has now been rescheduled to take place during the week 5th to 12th September, 2021.
Cumbria will host one of the eight stages although full details will not be announced until into the New Year.
The grand depart will be in Cornwall and the last stage will start at Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire.
“With the 2020 Tour of Britain not able to take place, the plan for this year has simply been carried over to September 2021,” said Peter Hodges, PR and marketing director with the SweetSpot group which organises the event.
It will be the 10th time that Cumbria has hosted the Tour with its stunning scenery, challenging climbs and the passionate support it receives combining to make it a “perfect host,” said organisers.
Cumbria gained an economic boost of more than £1.5 million from jointly hosting stage four of the 2019 tour.
The stage attracted 100,000 spectators to the county, including 35,000 spectators for the finish in Kendal.
In addition, nearly 500,000 viewers watched television coverage on ITV4.
