A Kirkby Stephen store closed its doors early yesterday evening after “more than one woman” left the premises with a trolley of goods without paying.
A police spokesman said they were called at 5.45pm about the incident, but that appears to be after those involved had left and the decision was taken to close the store.
The incident itself is believed to have taken place at the Kirkby Stephen Co-op store closer to 5.30pm.
“It is a shoplifting offence whereby more than one woman has left the store with a trolley of goods without paying.
“The incident is under investigation and work is ongoing to identify those responsible, including via the store’s CCTV,” the police spokesman said.
“Anyone with information which would assist this investigation is urged to contact police.”
