Kirkby Stephen’s long legacy of inns, pubs and breweries is celebrated in a new town walk guide.
Kirkby Stephen Old Ale Trail is the latest brochure from Kirkby Stephen Walkers are Welcome’s popular series of walking guides.
A special window display has also been made to mark the publication’s launch, in Kirkby Stephen’s Upper Eden Visitor Centre. Residents have kindly provided artefacts for the display including an old beer bottle from Rowlandson’s brewery.
The booklet contains information about 26 inns or pubs and four breweries which have been discovered in research by Ann Sandell.
She has pieced the trail together from historical documents, trade directories, newspapers, Census returns, old drawings and photographs. Information from Ten Blue Plaques is also included.
Anne, of Kirkby Stephen Walkers are Welcome, said: “This third booklet in the Upper Eden Discovery series represents a step back in time with businesses from the 18th to 21st century featuring a numbered walking trail around the town’s conservation area and additional history.”
This all started because she has done history walks around the town for many years and branches out with something new each year for Heritage Open Days.
One year she focused on old pubs and has added to it for the walk. The walking guide is available for considerably less than the current price of a pint, she added.
