A coroner has concluded that a paddleboarder drowned after losing his balance in “choppy” waters on Ullswater, an inquest in Cockermouth has heard.
Olumide Favour Giwa, aged 26, from Rochdale, and a friend, were paddleboarding in a popular area near the Aira Force pier on 7th August, when he fell off and did not resurface.
Unable to swim and without a buoyancy aid, his body was not found until 11th August despite a massive multi-agency search. Mr Giwa’s step-father told the hearing there were no warning signs at the location of the dangers, and criticised how the matter was handled by Cumbria police after his son’s body was found.
Originally from Nigeria, Mr Giwa, a security officer in Manchester, was described by his mum as a “very lively, friendly, passionate and caring person” and a “fantastic child”.
