Staff and regulars at a Penrith pub have played a ‘blinder’ in raising money for one of their own.
As reported in the Herald last week, The Grey Goat has been on a mission to raise money for popular barmaid Shannon Hay after she and her son were flooded out when pipes above their flat burst at Christmas.
To top up the cash already raised, on Sunday afternoon, customers at The Grey Goat, in Sandgate — run by publican Mike Jacques — went further by dressing up in the style of characters from the Peaky Blinders TV crime drama, which is set in turn-of-the-century Birmingham.
The men cut a sartorial dash in their peaked caps, hats, ties, heavy overcoats and waistcoats, while the women dazzled in beaded dresses, hats and pearls.
Prizes were given out for the best dressed and there was also a quiz and a raffle.
A total of £245 was raised on the day which pushed the entire amount raised by the pub close to the £2,000 mark.
Yet again, another generous regular slapped down a £50 note on top of a £100 contribution, and others too have been digging deep to hand over notes and chip in what they can.
