Eden gets ready for a right royal knees-up to celebrate Queen’s platinum jubilee

Penrith town centre will come alive with music and activities on Saturday for its Jubilee Jamboree.

Areas including St Andrew’s churchyard and the bandstand will feature local bands and crafters, with something for everyone to do or watch.

Event organiser Annabel Candler said: “We would really appreciate the weather to be kind! We can cope with rain but wouldn’t it be glorious for all this to happen in sunshine.”

There will be bands and performers in various areas of the town centre plus crafts and activities for every generation.

Organisations such as the Soroptimists, Eden Valley Artistic Network and Penrith library are taking part, assisting with bringing creativity and fun to the proceedings.

Elements including QR trails, Urban Sketchers, local bands (Tarzan’s Nuts, Absolutely and Vacant Weekend Project), dancing (salsa and swing) and theatre performances are just a few of the attractions.

The Chopping Block, in New Squares, is hosting an open mic session in the afternoon, before the town’s Wetherspoon pub has a charity fancy dress catwalk in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer.

There will also be a funfair in Sandgate, toddler games by First Class Kids, or a fancy dress photo booth by Penrith Players.

Penrith Town Band, the Committed 2 Rock choir, and BlueJam Arts will also provide music.

Competitions will include #CapturingPenrith, which involves members of the public photographing the event, trying to get a shot that sums up the day and posting to social media (must include the hashtag). Penrith Camera Club will be judging the winner.

Shops are also competing for the best dressed window.

Event attendees can vote by posting a shot of their favourite display and using #penrithjubileeshop.

The entire schedule is available at the tourist information centre, Penrith library and Tattie Tim’s baked potato stall in the centre of town.

Beacons will be lit tonight, Thursday, June 2, at more than 2,000 locations across the UK and Commonwealth, including at:

  • Penrith Castle
  • Beacon Hill, Penrith
  • Fairhill Playing Field, Penrith
  • Land above Ousby
