Who can I vote for in the local elections?

The names of the candidates for the elections to the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority are published today.

The new authority is to begin operating in April 2023.

At this time, Barrow Borough Council, Eden District Council, South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria County Council will cease to exist.

A Cumberland unitary authority is to be created in the north of the county. Candidates for that authority are listed here.

Sixty-five councillors will be elected to Westmorland and Furness Council following the elections on May 5.

In December, it was reported that the merging of authorities would mean a reduction in councillor numbers of at least 48 per cent across the Westmorland and Furness area. This figure was achieved using district councillor numbers only, with many serving at county level as well.

The deadline to register to vote is 11.59pm on Thursday, April 14.

Visit gov.uk/register-to-vote to register.
