Cumbria now has 26 areas with a higher coronavirus infection rate than the national average as Omicron continues to drive rising case numbers.
The county now has an infection rate of 1,644.1 after 8,217 cases were recorded in the week ending December 29. The England average is 1,508.1 per 100,000.
Allerdale, Barrow and Copeland all have infection rates higher than the national average.
Cases by district
Here is the number of weekly cases in each Cumbrian district accompanied by the rate per 100,000 in brackets:
- Allerdale – 1,648 (1,684.5 per 100,000)
- Barrow-in-Furness – 1,628 (2,439.8 per 100,000)
- Carlisle – 1,377 (1,268.8 per 100,000)
- Copeland – 1,545 (2,270.7 per 100,000)
- Eden – 554 (1,030.6 per 100,000)
- South Lakeland – 1,465 (1,96.5 per 100,000)
Deaths
For the week ending December 17, there were four deaths in Cumbria where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
Hospital admissions
As of December 29, there were 27 patients with coronavirus being treated by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, up from four on December 21.
Two of these patients were being treated on ventilated beds.
In the same weekly period, there were 62 patients with coronavirus being treated at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which operates hospitals in South Cumbria and North Lancashire.
This is up from 46 patients in the previous figures.
Four of those patients was being treated on ventilation beds.
