Carley and Chilli prove a hot combination at Greenlands

Carley and Chilli

Lune Valley rider Carley Thwaites and her pony Chilli proved a hot combination at Greenlands working hunter show.

Kirkby Stephen Grammar School pupil Carley, aged 14, was over the moon to win first place in the 75cm training stakes class with Chilli — the new pairing’s first red rosette.

Chilli was bought in May broken to ride and Carley has worked hard to bring on the five-year-old Welsh section D. She has set her sights high, setting a goal of making it to the Royal International Horse Show in the future.

Carley is the daughter of Clare and Garry Thwaites, with the family living near Tebay.

They are regular faces at the Greenlands working hunter winter series of shows organised by Heather Metcalf, of Raughton Head.

Another competitor from the Eden area who tasted sweet success was young rider Francesca Norman on her Shetland pony Rolo, with the cute duo winning first place in the 30cm style and performance class.

Four-year-old Connie Hutton, of Threlkeld, took home an array of rosettes having taken four placings with her two ponies — Welsh mare Waithwith Whoopi and her new appaloosa, Spotty.

In the first class of the day, Connie was selected by judge Steven Kerby for first place in the poles style and performance. In the poles training stakes she was helped in a quick changeover by mum Sarah to win first place on Waitwith Whoopi and third on Spotty.

Her success continued into the 30cm style and performance where she won third place with Waithwith Whoopi.

With riders coming from all over Cumbria, across from the North East and down from southern Scotland, there was a high standard of riding and Eden winners were out of the placings for several classes.

As the jumps went up Berrier’s Connie Cartmel took two third places riding her horse Raclaghy Ivan in the two 85cm classes. The young gelding, whose stable name is Flip, is being brought on by Ullswater Community College student Connie and her mother Debbie Hutchinson-Cartmel.

With the working hunter series of shows running monthly up to a championship show in March, the next event will be their Christmas show on Sunday, 19th December, when riders will be ditching their jackets for Christmas jumpers.
