Lucy Hetherington played a key dual role as Cumbria’s senior women’s cricket team got their first taste of victory.
On Sunday at Barrow Cricket Club, Cumbria’s newest senior side made their first appearance on home soil with back-to-back T20 fixtures against a visiting Herefordshire side.
And Cumbria won both games. In the second victory, Eden-based Lucy Hetherington took two for five with the ball before scoring an unbeaten 27 as the team reached their target with three overs to spare.
Lucy plays her club cricket for the Eden Eagles set-up which offers cricket to girls across the district.
Head coach David Fallows said: “This was very much the start of a new era for women’s cricket in Cumbria, with a strong squad of 20 players creating a new positive environment with real competition for places, which will hopefully inspire young girls in the pathway to want to fight for their place in the senior team.
“Indeed, it was great to see a number of the girls from the county sides watching from the boundary to support the women’s side along with their parents.”
Members of the inaugural Cumbria senior women’s squad are contesting matches in both T20 and 50-over formats this year in Division II of Tier 3 in a new national structure.
They will host Shropshire at Tynefield Park in Penrith on Sunday, 13th July, with T20 action getting under way at 10-30am.
In their opening game of the season a fortnight ago, Cumbria were beaten away to a Shropshire side boasting several Warwickshire Academy players.
On Monday they visit Staffordshire in the T20 cup competition.
