Champions – Kirkby Stephen Hockey Club

In a thrilling conclusion to the season, Kirkby Stephen faced off against Brooklands Poynton in a decisive match that would determine the league champions.

The stakes were high, and Kirkby Stephen rose to the occasion, securing a 2-1 victory that clinched the title.

The first half saw Kirkby Stephen establish a strong lead, with M. Bainbridge converting a penalty corner with a powerful straight shot, 15 minutes into the game. After a motivational teamtalk from coach Janette McWhirter, Bainbridge showcased her skills by scoring the opening goal from open play, bringing the score to 2-0 seven minutes after half time.

As the second half unfolded, Brooklands Poynton intensified their efforts, pressing high and putting immense pressure on the Kirkby Stephen defence.

With just nine minutes remaining, Brooklands finally broke through, scoring a goal that ignited their hopes of a comeback.

T. Rose was awarded a five minutes’ yellow card, for them claiming she purposely hit the ball away to delay time. And captain, Catherine Ewbank, also was warned for the team wasting time, with the threat of more cards.

In a frantic final five minutes, they earned seven penalty corners, with their passionate crowd urging the umpires for more opportunities.

Despite their relentless pursuit for an equalizer, in what seemed like hours, Kirkby Stephen held firm, ultimately sealing their victory and the league title in a match filled with drama and excitement.

This promotes Kirkby Stephen 1st team from North West Premier Division, into the England Hockey National Conference North league (equivalent to League 1 in English Football).

They celebrated with a crowd on the sidelines, with around 45 people travelling to Sale, Manchester, to support the small Cumbrian market town, matching the supporter crowd for the away team.
