A new luxury train will be weaving its way through Eden and the Lakes this summer, with its lucky passengers spending time in Penrith, Appleby and Keswick.
Travellers can enjoy three nights in a private suite on the Britannic Explorer touring Cumbria whilst enjoying fine dining, on train accommodation, and special local experiences to boot; including a visit to the Lingholm Estate, near Keswick — the Grade II listed mansion where Beatrix Potter spent her summers. Other highlights include stops in Penrith and Appleby, and a stretch of the Settle to Carlisle line.
Prices start at £8,500 per adult for the upmarket experience which harks back to a golden age of rail travel, complete with luxury restaurant cars plus a modern wellness suite. The train’s general manager, Hendrik Huebner, says the Lake District and Eden is ideal for a maiden route.
Explaining the choice of destinations, Hendrik says: “Penrith serves as a historic gateway to the Lake District with its medieval ties, while Appleby offers picturesque scenery, rich cultural heritage, and Georgian charm. Lingholm Estate in Keswick adds a literary connection and boasts stunning lakeside views.
“All the destinations visited will truly capture the essence of British heritage, allowing guests to explore both well-known and hidden gems in a way that’s deeply immersive and personal.”
The explorer’s first journey around The Lake District is due to take place on 11th July. As well as its pleasant destinations, the train itself is bound to be an attraction for enthusiasts, fitted out as it is with high-grade specifications and features, as well as 24-hour steward service.
Over four days, passengers can sip drinks in a Victorian-apothecary-inspired bar, whilst eyeing the stunning views.

Hendrik, whose CV includes prestigious London hotel, Claridge’s, says the star of the show though will be Cumbria’s natural and heritage delights: “One of the most exciting aspects of the Britannic Explorer is the chance to experience excursions that offer an unparalleled perspective of the Lake District’s historic and cultural gems.
“Our experiences will give guests exclusive access to places and moments that are typically beyond the reach of most travellers.
“From guided open-water swimming to simply taking a moment to breathe in the beauty of the nearby fells, guests will be able to reconnect with themselves whilst experiencing one of the finest natural wonders in England.”
Britannic Explorer is owned by Belmond, whose other trains include the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. The interiors of the explorer are designed by London-based studio, Albion Nord, and include 18 cabins — three grand suites and 15 suites, all with decor inspired by Britain’s landscapes.
