Gordon Savage, a resident at Winters Park Care Home in Penrith, and his wife Dorothy, celebrated 65 years of marriage this month.
Gordon and Dorothy met at Newton Rigg at Agriculture College in Penrith in 1954, and it was love at first sight.
On November 14 1959 Gordon and Dorothy got married at St Andrew’s Church in Burton-on-Stather, Scunthorpe.
After their marriage they farmed and lived at PearsGhyll, Calthwaite. Later, they moved to Bank End in Hesket-Newmarket and Cherry Trees in Hesket-Newmarket.
Presently, Gordon lives at Winters Park Care Home in Penrith where Dorothy and daughters come to visit him on a regular basis.
Gordon and Dorothy have three daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They say that the secret to a long and happy marriage is love and tolerance.
Dorothy added: “We never went to bed on an argument – this is the golden rule of the long marriage.”
Winters Park Care Home organised a date for this special occasion. The couple enjoyed the meal, cut the cake and a romantic atmosphere.
Egle Orante, activities co-ordinator, added: “It is truly remarkable to organise and celebrate this special occasion.”
