A Cumbrian-based swimmer has won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics.
Luke, who came to prominence at Cockermouth Swimming Club, finished third in the 200 metres backstroke final behind Russian Evgeny Rylov and America’s Ryan Murphy.
The 23-year-old said afterwards: “It is just amazing as it’s a dream come true. My first memory of swimming was watching the Beijing Olympics so it has always been an ambition of mine.
“I can actually remember my first session at Cockermouth.
“I was pretty nervous to be honest but I settled in really quickly, made a lot of good friends and the coaches were always really helpful.
“It’s an amazing club considering the size of the town.
“What they have got out of swimmers overs the years, especially at European junior level, has been incredible.
“I owe an awful lot to them and I think they have shaped who I have become as a person as well as a swimmer.”
Ryelov set a new Olympic record in claiming gold, touching in 1:53.27 while Greenbank earned his bronze in 1:54.72.
