War hero honoured

Date: Thursday 9th August 2018

DIGNITARIES and family members have gathered in Penrith to remember a World War I hero on the 100th anniversary of his death. A commemorative stone was unveiled in Castle Park today in honour of the "valour, courage and self-sacrifice" of Private Robert Matthew Beatham VC, formerly of Glassonby.

He was killed at the age of 24, while bombing a machine gun post in northern France. At today's event wreaths were laid at the new memorial. See Saturday's Herald for a full report.
