BURGLARS stole thousands of cigarettes after targeting two supermarkets in the same night.

Break-ins occurred between Thursday night and early Friday at the McColls store in Market Street, Kirkby Stephen, and Appleby Co-op, at The Sands.

There was also an attempted break-in at the BP filling station on the A66 at Kirkby Thore. Damage was caused to the premises at around 5-15am but nothing was taken. Police said nobody was hurt in any of the incidents and detectives are investigating.

A spokesman said: “Cumbria Constabulary would urge commercial premises to remain vigilant, particularly those in rural and isolated locations, and report any suspicious vehicles immediately.”
