Teenager’s lucky escape in river drama
EMERGENCY work has been carried out at a weir in Appleby after a child was almost dragged into a sinkhole.
The 13-year-old girl had to be rescued by up to four adults who pulled her free from the water as it sucked her in.
Fears had been expressed in Appleby that a sinkhole had formed and was becoming a danger to children. The area around Bongate weir and Jubilee footbridge, over the River Eden, has for many generations been a popular area for children to play in the water during summer.
