Groundbreaking Cumbria plastic road trial to be extended

CUMBRIA County Council has been allocated £1.6 million by the Department for Transport to spend on an extended trial of a plastic road surfacing material which has already proved a success on an Eden highway.

The bitumen substitute made from recycled plastic has been used on sections of road in the county including a junction on the A6 near Calthwaite — where it has proved stronger and more durable than the conventional material previously used there, as well as being more environmentally friendly.
