Green Party names candidate for Penrith by-election
THE Green Party in Penrith and Eden has selected Doug Lawson as its candidate for the by-election in the Penrith North ward of Eden District Council on 16th November.
Doug is a Penrith town councillor who played an important role in the Penrith campaign against education cuts. He is also involved with an initiative to reduce plastic packaging across Penrith.
He is active in the local community as a governor at Plumpton School and as a scout leader with 2nd Penrith Scouts. He is also a member of Penrith Methodist Church.
“I want to listen to residents in Penrith North about the current and planned housing developments in Penrith. These are going to have a major impact on Penrith North and especially on the green space that we have around Fairhill and Beacon Edge," he said.
"I will work for adequate health services, school places, leisure facilities, safe walking, cycling routes and working to introduce housing that local people can afford.
“If elected my commitment is to challenge the council to make the plan for the future of Penrith much more focused on sustainability and reducing the effect of abrupt climate change.”
The by-election is being held following the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Robin Howse for health reasons.
