Eden's walking gems to sparkle in tourism week

LOCAL people and residents are being encouraged to step out to discover some of Eden’s amazing walks during English Tourism Week, which runs from 17th to 25th March.

The week provides an extra opportunity to celebrate the huge variety of walks that are on offer around the Eden Valley, Ullswater and the North Pennines.

Eden Council's tourism team is running a special competition with a range of prizes donated by local tourism businesses. To enter visit http://www.visiteden.co.uk before 26th March.

The tourism team is also working with Penrith Ramblers and Kirkby Stephen Walkers are Welcome to offer local people and visitors the chance to explore parts of Eden in the company of expert walking guides on a series of free walks. “We are delighted to be running these special walks during English Tourism Week,” said Graham Allan, Penrith Ramblers chairman. “Walking is a very popular pastime among local people and visitors. It helps people discover more about the area and helps them stay fit and well at the same time.

"We hope more people will find out why walking together is great fun as they set out on any of our special tourism week walks this year."

Anne Sandell, chairwoman of Kirkby Stephen and District Walkers are Welcome, added: “Walking is at the heart of Kirkby Stephen and the Upper Eden Valley for both residents and visitors alike. From weekly health walks, disabled routes, the Poetry Path, following the River Eden to climbing Nine Standards Rigg on the famous coast to coast walk there is a fantastic variety to enjoy in all weathers."

“With more than four million visitors to Eden every year it is no wonder that Eden’s wealth of walking opportunities have become popular with growing numbers of people. We hope these special walks running during English Tourism Week will open people’s eyes to some new walking gems.”
