Close gates plea after injuries to farm worker

Date: Friday 7th July 2017

WALKERS are being urged to close gates behind them after a failure to do this resulted in a farm worker in the Upper Eden area suffering serious injuries.

Cattle at Smardale Hall, Kirkby Stephen, got on to open fell land and mixed with other beasts after a gate was left open, forcing farmer Steve Dargue and his employee Ian Walton to go out on quad bikes to retrieve them. The weather was terrible, cows carrying young were lively and, as the two men went back and forth, Ian was thrown from his bike.

Steve said: “This is a farming community, and walkers are not aware of the harm they can cause to the countryside.”
