THE doors opened on a new classroom at Kirkby Stephen Primary School this week, thanks to a community fund-raising effort which enabled 45 new reception children to enrol.

In April it emerged that at least 44 children would be applying to join the school for the new term, exceeding the school’s published admission number of 30.

Cumbria County Council advised the school to stick to its 30 limit and offered no help. The authority would then have refused at least 14 children places and instead shipped them to schools out of the town.

Headteacher Lynne Wade pledged to make space for all the children who wanted to join the school and said that as a “true community school” they would exclude nobody.

A fund-raising drive was launched to raise £50,000 towards the classroom, with a further £50,000 coming from the school’s own budget.
