Arson attack on cricket club branded “brainless and moronic”

Date: Friday 16th June 2017

AN arson attack at Appleby Cricket Club on Thursday evening saw vandals set fire to a door and wooden cladding on the pavilion.

Police are investigating the fire, which took hold of the building at around 9pm, but was fortunately spotted by two dog walkers who alerted the emergency services.

The incident came just weeks after vandals in Appleby targeted one of the newly refurbished riverside shelters where graffiti was scrawled.

Appleby firefighters rushed to the club on Thursday and found the pavilion well alight. The fire had taken hold of an exterior fire door and spread to wooden cladding.

Cricket club officials have condemned the vandalism, calling it “brainless” and “moronic”.
