£51,000 handout to Eden community groups

COMMUNITY groups have been awarded more than £51,000 in grants from Eden Council’s Community Fund.

Ravenstonedale Parish Council will receive £2,000 towards the £7,000 cost of drainage work at the recreation ground, and Fairhill Community Group (Penrith) will get £10,000 towards its £40,000 new playground equipment project.

Armathwaite Old School Hall has been awarded £8,560 for phase one refurbishment works, which involve making the building safe and watertight, plus lime mortar pointing.

Other awards include: Croglin village hall, £500 towards the cost of staging a special “Play, Pie and a Pint” event to mark the 80th anniversary of the building; Melmerby village hall, £2,000 towards the cost of blackout curtains and broadband; Dufton village hall, £5,000 towards the cost of waterproofing its basement to create a new meeting room. Newbiggin Parish Meeting, £2,000 to buy a new mower for a volunteer resident to continue to maintain the village green; Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge, £5,000 towards replacing all windows with double glazed units; Tirril and Sockbridge reading rooms, £500 towards the cost of a new dishwasher; Lazonby Bowling Club, £3,000 towards the cost of a replacement storage shed.

Crosby Garrett village hall, £5,000 towards replacement flooring; Appleby Community Acting Together (ACAT), £1,500 towards the cost of staging the Sparkle Day; Gamblesby community centre, £524 towards replacing lighting with low energy versions; The Studio, Morland, £1,500 to create a welcoming space for arts and well-being in a isolated rural setting; Hunsonby Swimming Club, £1,705 towards the cost of a new jumping board and promotional material for the pool’s 80th anniversary; Newbiggin-on-Lune public hall, £2,500 for improvements.

More than £30,000 remains in the community fund for applications in this financial year. The council’s cabinet said it was happy to continue supporting community groups in this way, as it was aware of how much access to other funding its grants could unlock.
