Teenage cycle star finds himself up against Jason Kenny …

Date: Friday 1st February 2019

PENRITH teenager Matti Egglestone found himself lining up beside six times Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny at the British Cycling senior national track championships, held at Manchester Velodrome.

The 16-year-old, who, following heart surgery lat year, decided to track race rather than road race, and focus on sprinting as this involves more indoor training rather than hill climbing, competed in three events, culminating in the kierin — in which competitors follow a motorbike. It is one of the disciplines in which Kenny won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Egglestone reached the final and lined up at the start next to Kenny, with another top British rider, Jack Carlin, also in the six-man race. All except Egglestone were professional cyclists.
