Crash laves superbike star with neck and back injuries
REIGNING Bennetts British Superbike Champion Shane Byrne, who rides for Paul Bird's Eden-based Be Wiser Ducati team, was taken to hospital yesterday following a crash in the opening session of the official Snetterton test.
The six-times champion crashed heavily on his third lap of the session, bringing out a red flag.
He was taken to the medical centre for assessment, where it was confirmed he was briefly unconscious following the incident, and was then transferred to Norfolk hospital.
A medical update at 6pm yesterday said: "Shane Byrne was transferred to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where he has undergone further assessment and scans this afternoon. He is conscious and alert but remains under observation and is receiving treatment for neck and back injuries."
The 2018 championship is heading to Snetterton for the fourth round of action on the weekend of June 15-17.
