Blues survive another penalty shootout

Date: Friday 17th March 2017

PENRITH AFC can start their Cumberland FA Senior Cup final countdown after booking their place in this season’s county showpiece.

Jim Nichols’ Blues eventually prevailed against Carlisle City 3-2 in a nail-biting penalty shootout on Wednesday — after the near neighbours could not be separated at the end of 120 semi-final minutes at Frenchfield Park.

That followed their 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Silloth in the quarter-finals.

Appleby-based keeper Josh Richardson was the home side’s hero on Wednesday, saving three City spot kicks as Penrith eventually found the target after missing two penalties in normal time.

And boss Nichols looked forward to the cup final, at Brunton Park in early May, against either Work-ington AFC or Carlisle-based Pirelli, of the Westmorland League. A date for their semi-final is still to be fixed.
