Support revitalised bus service from start
Sir, When the 563 Kirkby Stephen-Penrith bus service was discontinued last year, Stagecoach advised that it would not be a viable route for it.
We are most grateful that the company has taken time and trouble to review ridership and revenue data and has enterprisingly registered an off-peak weekday 563 service that dovetails into its school contracts. This will consist of three Penrith-Appleby return journeys between 09-15 and 15-00. Details of the service will be publicised ahead of its launch on 4th September.
To ensure the establishment and possible future development of this service, it is vital that we all support it from the start.
The 563 is envisaged as an all-year service. During school terms it will be complemented by the weekday Stagecoach 506 Appleby-Penrith-Kendal College service, which arrives in Penrith at 07-30 and returns from Penrith at 18-30, providing the opportunities for travel to and from work or longer journeys to, e.g., the Lakes.
Further good news is that Cumbria Classic Coaches will continue to operate its popular 574 Kirkby Stephen-Penrith return service on Tuesdays; travellers will now have the option to make a stop in Appleby by patronising both companies.
Credit is also due to Robinsons Coaches, which has kept faith with the 561 Appleby-Tebay-Kendal Wednesday off-peak return service. This, too, runs commercially, but a recent fall in passenger numbers is causing concern.
If we don’t use our buses we’ll lose them; so please support them now — whether or not you have a car. Bus travel is friendly and stress-free, with no parking problems.
And by using bus services you not only support those who don’t have access to their own transport but also insure against the time when that could be you. Yours etc,
