Putting faces to names

Date: Tuesday 30th October 2018

Sir, The Penrith Remembers research group has been hard at work over the past 18 months researching all those who are named on the Penrith civic war memorial at the entrance to Castle Park.

We are now at the proof-reading stage and in the near future the research will be printed, bound and presented to the library for public use.

Using copies of the Herald published during the 1914-1919 period we managed to find more than 120 pictures of the 200 soldiers and one nurse who are named on the memorial.

The quality of some are not as good as we would have liked, but at least they give an image of the person who has been researched.

The purpose of this letter is to inquire whether anybody has a family picture of anyone on the memorial. These are a valuable historical resource which adds clarity to the research of what happened 100 years ago.

I would appeal to all, please may we copy your pictures of a member of your family who is named on the Penrith war memorial. Please contact me at 016974 75923 or via richardgreatwarcumbria.co.uk. Yours etc,

RICHARD PRESTON

(Co-chairman, Penrith Remembers)
