Community use for unwanted chapel?

Date: Tuesday 7th March 2017

Sir, I read (Herald, 25th February) that Eden District Council planners are proposing another 115 new homes close by the Orchard Place estate in Appleby.

Through agents, the district is offering for sale the chapel in the adjacent cemetery. Here is an opportunity to redevelop the chapel as a meeting place for the expanding local community.

Approaches through the agents to Eden Council officers for the building to be released to a community organisation for local use have been rejected: the district says it needs the £35,000 sale price. This is a missed opportunity for local community development.

Handing over the building would be cost neutral to the council and can be afforded (as Adrian Waites outlined in his letter of 11th February) in view of the New Homes Bonus being collected by the council on new houses. Yours etc,

CARL BENDELOW
