Bad weather brings out best
Sir, It is easy to complain when things go wrong but the horrendous weather and aftermath last week also brought out the best in people. Like many others in Cumbria, the snowdrifts and power cuts made life difficult for the hamlet of Park Head.
However, we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone who helped out. It would be impossible to mention them all but particular thanks go to the staff of Electricity North West who worked in appalling conditions to restore power; Gavin the gamekeeper who with his partner brought up supplies just to make sure we had enough basic foodstuffs; local farmers who cut a way through the drifts with their tractors which made walking down to Kirkoswald for supplies so much easier; Alan and Daniela at the shop who did all they could to maintain supplies and even shared some of their own vegetables; the council road men and contractors who worked really hard to push aside the drifts so we could, at last, drive out — and all our neighbours and friends who made sure everyone was safe and warm. Thank you all. Yours etc,
JIM and CINDY BUTTERWORTH, BRIAN and JENNIFER SMYTHE
