Alston spic and span for royal visit

Date: Monday 8th April 2013

Sir, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the community of Alston Moor and the council’s street cleansing contractor, Enterprise, and its recycling contractor, CWR, for pulling out all the stops to spruce up the town in preparation for the visit by Prince Charles to Alston on 28th March.

The severe winter weather we have been experiencing in recent weeks has caused some disruption to our scheduled services and we appreciated the public’s concerns about wanting their town to be looking its best for the first royal visitor to Alston Moor since Mary Queen of Scots.

Enterprise and CWR responded promptly to the requests put forward by the officers in the council’s contracts team by providing additional services, so that the town centre was cleaned and household recycling collections in certain parts of Alston Moor took place before the next scheduled collection date.

I would like to thank all the parties concerned for their good will and hard work on this occasion. The council chairman, Keith Morgan, informs me that Prince Charles commented favourably to him about the appearance of the town, which is a credit to all concerned. Yours etc,

MIKE TONKIN

(Environment portfolio holder, Eden District Council)
