Starring TV rolefor working mine
THE Honister slate mine, near Keswick, is to feature on the More 4 TV show Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes, which explores what it is like to live and work in England’s biggest protected expanse of open countryside.
Honister will appear throughout the series, which started on Tuesday.
Filmed over several months, it will feature co-owner Joe Weir doing a live blast in the mine to extract the Honister green slate from Fleetwith Pike, as well as the family enjoying skiing on the side of the mountain during the unusually heavy snow fall earlier this year.
The business is run by the Weir family, who reopened it as a working mine in 1997, a decade after its original closure.
Mr Weir said: “By taking part in this series we hope to show what an amazing, constantly evolving place the Lake District is to live, work and visit. The slate gets into your blood. It’s not a job, but a way of life that takes hard graft and tenacity.”
