Roadside scarecrow torched
A ROADSIDE scarecrow has been burned by vandals for the second time in a month.
Edna and Doug Banks have placed a scarecrow on a bike beside the Langwathby to Little Salkeld road near their home for the last eight years.
Overnight on Monday, the figure — dressed in tartan accessories for Burns Night — was torched and only the charred bike frame was left. An aerosol can was found nearby.
Just before Christmas, another scarecrow, dressed as Santa, was destroyed after it was set alight. Edna told the Herald this week: “Like last time, I was thinking ‘let’s just forget it’, but I thought ‘no, it’s not going to beat me’.”
Over the Christmas and New Year period, the scarecrow was knocked over and had its head taken. Each time, Edna and Doug rebuilt it.
Police are investigating the incident and anybody with information is asked to contact them on the 101 number.
