Sir, I was saddened to read (Herald, 20th May) that the youngest councillor, Thomas Sheriff, has stepped down from Eden District Council.
It is important that young, enthusiastic people like him are attracted to public service and improve the age profile of the council. His departure is doubly regrettable, as in my experience he was one of the members of the planning committee who listened to what was said and made up his own mind based on evidence.
He described his experience with Eden as an “eye-opener”, which is a matter of concern, as he is a town and country planning graduate. I, too, am a planning graduate, and find the antics of the planning committee deeply disturbing. Yours etc,
(Chairman, Sockbridge and Tirril Parish Council)
