Refugees settling well

Date: Friday 18th August 2017

SYRIAN refugees are settling in to their new homes in Penrith, according to Cumbria County Council.

The refugees have started attending English language lessons and making use of chances to learn the language, council officers have reported.

A multi-agency steering group, comprising a number of public agencies, has also helped the families integrate into Eden life. “The group and the refugee resettlement case worker have been working with communities to help support the needs of the families,” said a report before the Eden local committee.

A “very small” number of refugees arrived in Eden and Carlisle in April with more expected to arrive later this year. Support for the refugees is being met by the Home Office as part of a national resettlement scheme.
