Rail station disabled access hope

Date: Friday 25th May 2018

PENRITH and the Border MP Rory Stewart is “confident” that the situation can be improved for disabled passengers at the Kirkby Stephen station on the Settle-Carlisle line.

Mr Stewart wants to the solve the problems around accessing the northbound platform, which involves a dangerous gravel slope down to a busy road, with no parking spaces or safety measures for the disabled, the elderly or those with children.

After meeting with representatives from Northern Rail and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority along with local disability campaigners Debbie and Andy North, of the Upper Eden Community Plan steering group, Mr Stewart vowed to press for improvements to be made.

He said: “I am confident we can improve the situation for disabled passengers at Kirkby Stephen — starting with a much better ramp and then moving on to bigger investments in the future. I am delighted that Northern Rail and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority are lending their support to make this happen.”
