Poppy powered charity fundraiser
A FIELD of bright red poppies has attracted hordes of people to Kirkby Thore and raised money for charity.
The poppies first showed up as a surprise two years ago after farmer Nigel Teasdale planted the field with barley. They didn’t come through again until this year and Nigel believes ploughing the field brought the seeds back to the surface.
“A lot of people said two years ago we should have had an honesty box and this time we thought we would raise money for Hospice at Home,” said Nigel, of Halefield Farm.
Nigel cared for his father, Walter, for a year and he was given respite care by Eden Valley Hospice towards the end of his life at the age of 93.
The family decided to put a notice up by the seven-acre field asking those who visit to donate to the charity via an online fundraising page. So far, more than £180 has been raised.
Nigel said many people have visited to see the field and take photos, coming by early from 8am and into the evening too.
