Pool reopens following storm damage
SHAP swimming pool has reopened after damage was caused during last week’s Storm Hector.
High winds damaged steel posts supporting the pool compound’s sectional walling, causing the panels to break free. There was also some minor damage caused to the pool insulating covers which had to be secured by volunteers to prevent them from blowing away. The pool has recently undergone a £100,000 upgrade and was only open for a week when the damage was caused and it was forced to close.
Jeanette Morris, committee chair and trustee, said: “Everyone was shocked and devastated by the incident. We were reassured by our advisors and the manufacturer that the chosen (walling) solution would stand up to the winds experienced in Shap. No-one expected this sort of damage to be caused to the steel supports. The manufacturer and our advisors are working with us to fully understand what happened and to design a long-term solution.”
Jeanette said members of the committee have been “overwhelmed” by the support from the local community who have helped.
The pool opened from Thursday evening.
