New role for Edwardian mansion

Date: Friday 23rd June 2017

THE new owner of Scalesceugh Hall has pledged luxury, state-of-the-art homes for the over-50s in the grounds of the Edwardian mansion near Carlisle.

Dr. Anita Herdeiro and her husband, Bruno, plan to create what they call a new approach to retirement, where the emphasis is on well-being and a healthy lifestyle.

The 13 villas, in acres of gardens and parkland, are a mix of semi-detached and terraced “cottages” with two bedrooms. The hall itself will be for residential use with a library, coffee lounge and fitness rooms.

Dr. Herdeiro, who has a long career in health care for the elderly, said: “We are offering a new perspective on retirement. People talk about growing old with dignity or with grace.

“To me that’s all about staying healthy and active in mind and body, keeping connected to friends and family and being part of a vibrant community.”

The multi-million pound development is modelled on schemes in Northern Europe and Australia but is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK. An open day is planned on Saturday, 15th July.
