Man facing attempted murder charge

Date: Friday 16th February 2018

AN Eden man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly setting a man on fire and attacking him with a machete.

Francis Robertson, whose Christian name was listed on original court papers as Frank, is accused of committing the offences in an attack at a sports shop on Wigton Road, Carlisle, on Tuesday. Robertson (60), Bankhouse Bungalow, Stainton, appeared from custody at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with the attempted murder of Vaughan Liversy.

He was further charged with two offences of possessing offensive weapons in public — a machete and also petrol and a blowtorch.

No pleas were entered by Robertson and a brief outline of the alleged offences was given by prosecutor Mr John Moran. Robertson was represented by solicitor Mr Sean Harkin who said no application for bail was being made at this stage, but one would be made at the crown court.

Due to the severity of the charges, the magistrates automatically committed the case to Carlisle Crown Court, where Robertson will next appear on 5th March. He was remanded in custody.

Police are continuing to appeal for information in relation to the alleged attack.

In particular officers would like to hear from anyone who has a dash cam on their vehicle and who drove along Wigton Road between 9am and 12pm on Tuesday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cumbria police on the 101 number.
