Date: Friday 18th August 2017

CELEBRITY organic gardener Bob Flowerdew, who regularly appears on Gardeners’ Question Time on BBC Radio 4 and also on BBC TV’s Gardeners’ World, entertained more than 100 local enthusiasts at Melmerby village hall this week.

The star, who had been invited by Melmerby and District Gardening Club, talked for more than an hour in a presentation on the subject of “Fruits, Glorious Fruits” which contained stacks of advice and help.

The presentation was interlaced with personal memories and anecdotes that had the audience laughing out loud.

Club chairman Sheila Ripper, who had first contacted Bob, said: “It was a fabulous night and a big gamble for us, We are only a small club and celebrities like Bob don’t come cheap, but the support we received from our members and other keen local gardeners made it a really worthwhile event.”

Following his talk Bob answered questions and talked to members of the audience while they socialised and enjoyed home-produced refreshments.

The Melmerby club has been running for more than 30 years and has members from along the East Fellside, Penrith and even villages to the west of Penrith.
