RESCUERS battled for two hours to save a horse which had become trapped up to its neck in deep mud near Kirkby Stephen.

Firefighters from Kirkby Stephen, Kendal and Sedbergh used large animal rescue equipment and “digging out” techniques with a 4x4 vehicle to free the horse from a heavy bog on Saturday evening.

Only the animal’s head was visible above ground as it had become submerged in at least 5ft of mud at Fell End, Ravenstonedale, when a farmer called for the emergency services.

The three fire crews were on the scene for more than two hours. A vet from Pendragon Vets and a Kirkby Stephen mountain rescue team crew were in attendance to help keep the animal calm during the operation.
